Star Wars Lego II – The Original Trilogy

Since I loved Star Wars Lego I, I knew I had to get II as soon as it came out. Since the Gamecube is phasing out (Wii is coming) I decided to get it for the Nintendo DS.

The concept is still really fun and they pushed the theme by letting you mix and match “body parts” as you earn characters. You can put Chewbacca’s head on Leia’s princess body with a blaster. Fun! Also, instead of little vehicles (in the first game), you earn bounty hunters as you collect barrels through the game.

And like the first game, you can play cooperatively with a friend. This is really designed for parents to aid their children (or would that be the other way around) as the game would be waaaaay to easy for two older/experienced gamers to play.

The real downside for me is that the controls are horrible using the DS. If you have to cross a walk way at a diagonal angle, you’re hosed. The 4-direction pad on the DS allows for minimal manuverability. I’m sure in a full-sized console, this wouldn’t be as big of an issue. Also, it’s pretty difficult to aim at enemies. It’s frustrating to be killed while you’re shooting to the side of the attacking enemy because you can’t get the damn blaster to aim AT the Stormtrooper.

The violence is all Lego-ized, but you’re still blasting away at things. The theme is fun, the extras and unlockables are plentiful and I’m glad I got it. Just buy the game for one of the regular consoles and you and your kids should have a great time playing.
